Newsletter June 2009
We hope everyone had a good Easter break and that the weather forecasters are correct with their warm summer predictions! Also, a warm welcome to the parents of our new Pre-Reception children.
Nursery progress
The Local Authority have now given us official permission to open our Nursery in January 2010 but final details on numbers etc will be sent out next term. We are absolutely delighted and thank you for all your comments on the proposal.
Parking
I usually remind parents to be considerate about parking in South Parade because space is so limited and the road so narrow that there is a real risk of a young child getting hurt. I am writing this though because a local resident herself very nearly ended up seriously hurt and has asked the school to write to you. Parking in Lewis Close is for residents only and there must be clear, unobstructed views out of the cul-de-sac so people can leave and return to their homes safely. About a week ago, a people carrier parked right at the end of the close and a car had to go onto the wrong side of the road to get round it. Another car was approaching and a very nasty accident was only very narrowly avoided. Please be considerate and, if there is space, park down at the Village Hall. We realise with the new housing on the Croft Hotel car park space is limited but an accident is the last thing we all want.
Parent Teacher Association
Our parents group that works so hard to fund raise for the school would like suggestions from parents for things from which school would benefit. This year they have raised, with your support, enough money to buy a parents’ noticeboard to be fixed next to the general one on the yard (on order!), new staging for the children’s productions which we hope will be in school for the end of term Leavers’ Assembly and Prize Giving and larger blue bags for Y5/6 for the autumn term. They also help to subsidise the cost of school trips and they are going to buy a weather station for the Climate Cops and are keen to encourage anyone who would like to join them to come along to their next meeting. The more the merrier!
Tea Towels
Tea towels with the children’s names and faces on are still available in school. These are £3 and can be purchased from the office. (Last chance for current Year 6 to have a momento!)
Contact details
Thank you very much for providing your updated details for our records We still have a small number of people whose forms we would like returned as soon as possible. E mail addresses are also very useful for speedy communication and it does mean letters don’t get mislaid in Blue Bags!
Workers’ Education Association
In April, we sent out a letter asking if anyone would be interested in taking part in a range of courses eg Parent Helpers, ICT for Parents. The WEA were willing to run these free of charge in school but we have to have 10 parents on each one. So far we have 8 replies so if you did not receive the letter, or would like to send your reply in by the end of next week, we shall try and organise some dates.
Tesco and Sainsbury’s Vouchers
Please bring in any vouchers you have as soon as possible. Mrs Dent is counting!!
Governors
Last term the governors reviewed many policies and were involved with the Nursery consultation. Governors with subject responsibilities watched lessons throughout the school, liaised with members of staff and reported back to the Full Governing Body. This term we will be reviewing the School Profile, Prospectus and School Self-Evaluation Form.
Sri Lanka
Mrs Leggott and Mrs Parker had a wonderful time at our partner school in Sri Lanka and learnt so many things about their culture and way of life in school. Hospitality from the school was excellent and when the two teachers from Sri Lanka visit our school in early September, we hope they will have a memorable time, and that you enjoy meeting them. We are planning an evening in school on Thursday, 25th June, 6.15 – 7.15 pm to share information about the school link and answer any questions you may have. Tickets will be £3 and will include a glass of wine and nibbles (extra wine available!) Please try to come along (perhaps while your child is at Brownies) and support us. We are also planning a service in church on September 11th at 2.30 pm to celebrate the link, followed by afternoon tea in school.
Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning (SEAL)
The theme for this term’s work is Relationships. The children will be considering important relationships in their lives and some of the feelings that go with these. The theme starts with an assembly and will be followed up in class.
Climate Cops
If anyone has any old mobile phones or used ink cartridges, the Climate Cops would like them. They will be able to send them off and receive ‘Green Leaves’ towards their target of 1200.
They are also collecting old tights which they can recycle by making them into draught excluders. Thank you for your help.
Indoor shoes – just a reminder
If your child wants to wear proper shoes indoors rather than plimsolls, that is fine but please ensure your child has a separate pair of indoor shoes and that footwear is safe and doesn’t easily slide off.
Sun hats and sunscreen
As the weather forecasters are telling us it should be a lovely summer, please send a named sun hat in with your child if you think they could be in danger of getting sunburn. The sun’s rays, especially over a lengthy period such as lunchtime, can be very hot. Also, we recommend you apply a long lasting suncream to your child if the forecast is for sunny weather.
Verruca socks
If your child has a verruca, please make sure they have a special verruca sock to wear for swimming. Verrucaes are highly contagious, especially in warm, moist conditions.
